QUESTION |
ANSWER |
Housing |
The house accommodations provided are basic. Each room contains 2-3 beds, 2-3 dressers for clothes, an AC, a desk, and a refrigerator. During the Ulpan the rooms are cleaned by its occupants, and between Ulpans the buildings are cleaned by Ulpan staff. |
Finances |
A food budget will be provided monthly for lunch and dinner. Breakfast will be provided daily either by the Ulpan or the working places. The budget will be loaded monthly on to your Ulpan payment card. All other products, such as toiletry, snacks, etc., are the participant’s responsibility. |
Meals |
The provided meal allowance should be sufficient for three meals a day. Meals are provided in the kibbutz dining room as follows: Lunch is provided Sunday through Thursday. Dinner is provided on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. On days that meals aren’t provided at the kibbutz dining room, you may use your lunch allowance to either buy food at the local shop and cook on your own or buy ready-made food and snacks. There is a fully equipped communal kitchen on the kibbutz. |
Hebrew Ulpan & Volunteer work |
Classes are separated by Hebrew skill level. Classes are held every other day with work on days you are not in class. There will be about 24 hours of class each week depending on activities in the Ulpan such as trips, events, etc. The Hebrew class curriculum starts with a review of the alphabet. Then students will learn to read first without vowels, then they will progress to learning vocabulary, learning the infinitives, and learning how to conjugate past and future tense. Eventually, they will learn how to put together a full spoken essay (3-5 paragraphs) by the end of the course. The Ministry of Education is in charge of all classes, so they are subject to change. Work on the kibbutz is assigned according to both the needs of the business and your preference. The working places include but are not limited to: a hydroponic greenhouse, the heder ochel (dining hall), the kibbutz grocery store, the kibbutz department store, the petting zoo, a carpentry shop, gardening on the kibbutz, and working along with the Ulpan staff in our moadon. |
Your spare time |
The way our Ulpan operates is that class and work days alternate daily. Whether you work or study, you’ll be done with your tasks at around 14:00 p.m. depending on your job. Afterwards, you are free to do what you please as long as you are back for work or class the next day! |
Weekends |
Weekends are for you to explore the area outside the kibbutz. The options are endless! There’s a central bus station just a short bus ride from the kibbutz. You can hop on a bus to take you to the nearby city of Haifa (20 minutes), the beach (20 minutes), Tel Aviv (1.5 hours), or practically anywhere in the country! You can hike on one of the many trails in the area or watch a movie in the theatre located just a 7-minute bus ride away. Trips will also be taken about once a month to places like Akko, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, the Dead Sea/Masada/Bedouin camp, etc. |
Social life on the kibbutz |
As a Kibbutz Ulpan participant, you will have access to a variety of cultural activities organized by Kibbutz Yagur and by the Jewish Agency for Israel, including tours around Israel and holiday celebrations with the kibbutz. |
Program Cost & Tuition |
Kibbutz Ulpan across all the Kibbutzim is the same price and costs $6,150 for the full five months. This cost includes: Ulpan classes, housing and meals (unless stated otherwise in “Meals”), and guided tours and activities operated by Kibbutz Ulpan.
