Solidarity of Nations- Achvat Amim
Achvat Amim is open to participants between the ages of 21-30. Applicants can be students, workers, teachers, travelers, activists all of the above, or something entirely different. The ideal applicant has been to Israel before and is familiar with some of the subject matter at hand.
We aim to bring people together who are motivated to make real change in the world around them. Achvat Amim, along with partners including Rabbis for Human Rights, an Israeli human rights organization that gives "voice to the Jewish tradition of human rights", connects participants to projects that aim to end racism, violence and inequality as an essential building block for a society based on values that are central to Judaism such as justice, equity, and peace.
We are seeking participants who are excited to develop a creative and participatory learning environment for exploring Jewish history, tradition and culture in order to build identity and community.
Where do we live?
Participants live together in an apartment/house in West Jerusalem. The group is made up of between 8-12 people who share kitchen space, learning space, working space and relaxing space. We also work to balance the many amazing elements of collective living with the importance of personal space and privacy.
When does it all happen?
Achvat Amim is a 5 month program. Participants are of course welcome to arrive in Israel anytime before the start date and stay anytime after.
What do I do all day?
The program is built on three main components, including volunteer work centered around the group project that participants work on together and the individual projects that participants build with our partners. This also includes building dynamic learning spaces, which can take the shape of everything from day tours and meetings around the region to discussions and activities in seminar spaces to weekend excursions further from Jerusalem, exploring new places and interesting new people. As well, participants have time and space to live life in Jerusalem, independently exploring the city's markets, cafes, libraries, music, sports, and of course, people.
Working with our Partners
First and foremost, participants will be working in a number of projects with Rabbis for Human Rights, an Israeli human rights organization. As well, participants take part in building programs at the Jerusalem Hand in Hand: Center for Jewish-Arab Education, an integrated, bilingual school. We also work with organizations such as the Tent of Nations Sustainable Farm, and the Palestine-Israel Journal among others. Some of the projects will have a social and educational focus, like working in a school or community center doing arts or language based education and empowerment work; others will be physical projects, like working with youth to design and build a community garden. You will work on projects individually, in small teams, and with the whole Achvat Amim group. Our aim is to ensure that you gain experience in various areas and that the work you do has real positive impacts on the people you work with and on you. Projects will be determined based on the skill sets and interest of the selected group and the needs of community partners.
Learning Spaces
Through learning sessions, lectures and participatory activities, we will explore what it means to engage with a complex world as a Jewish person, renew the dialogue surrounding Zionism in the 21st century, and envision our role in the struggle for a society rooted in fairness and equality. Topics will range from Israeli politics and geography, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Zionist and Jewish philosophy to activism in the 20th century, community organizing practices, and economic theory. As well, while Achvat Amim engages with Jewish thought and culture from a primarily secular perspective, we will bring a multitude of perspectives together in order to fully enrich the ongoing development of the conversation.
Language Study
The group learns Hebrew and Arabic in small and participatory group settings which are be geared toward interaction and creative language learning techniques. We will work with you to determine your language level in Arabic and Hebrew so that you are in a positive and passionate learning space. The language learning is based in critical pedagogical practice and connected to the This is Not an Ulpan program.
Trips
The group will have regular trips, seminars, and outdoor experiences throughout Israel and the West Bank. We will run down sand dunes in the Negev desert, meet refugees in the West Bank, discuss politics with members of the urban Kibbutz movement near Haifa and see the reality on the ground in Hebron.
Explore
You are going to be living in Jerusalem - a city full of complexity and diverse cultural life. You will go to cafes and bars and art exhibits. You will join learning circles, minyanim and celebrations. You will discover the connections and tensions between East and West Jerusalem, as well as the vast and very real meanings behind words such as conflict, occupation, peace, justice and self-determination. You will have meetings and go to work on your project. You will learn all over the city and all over the country.
